WOS General Operating Funds

The General Operating Fund is a great place to contribute to our organization. Your financial support helps the Society to continue our mission and focus efforts on our main objectives.

Margaret Morse Nice Medal

The Margaret Morse Nice Medal is the premiere ornithological award bestowed by the Wilson Ornithological Society. The medal, established in 1997, honors a lifetime of contributions to ornithology.

William and Nancy Klamm Service Award

Beginning in 2007, the Klamm Service Award has been given annually to a member who has performed extraordinary service to the society.

Louis Agassiz Fuertes Research Grant

The Wilson Society’s most prestigious award is available to all ornithologists, although graduate students and young professionals are preferred. Any avian research is eligible. Up to two awards are given annually.

WOS Research Grant

For research in any area of ornithology. Two of these awards will be limited to research by Masters students, four awards given annually.

Hall/Mayfield Research Grant

This award is limited to independent researchers without access to funds and facilities available at colleges, universities, or governmental agencies, and is restricted to non-professionals, including high school students. Any kind of avian research is eligible. One award is given annually.

Jed Burtt Mentoring Grant

The Wilson Ornithological Society is pleased to offer grants available to mentors of undergraduate students working in collaboration on an ornithological research project. These grants are named in honor of Edward (“Jed”) H. Burtt, Jr., a Past-President of WOS (1997-1999) and an exemplary mentor of undergraduates during his distinguished career.

Paul A Stewart Research Grant

Preference is given to proposals for studies of bird movements (based on banding, radio or satellite telemetry, or similar methods) or an emphasis on economic ornithology. Up to four awards are given annually.

WOS Student Travel Award

WOS supports active student involvement in each annual meeting by making available student travel possible.

Edwards Prize (Publication Award)

The Edwards Prize for the best major article in each volume of The Wilson Journal of Ornithology was first awarded by WOS in 1970.

Olson Prize (Publication Award)

The Storrs Olson Prize is awarded by the Editor for the best book review published in each volume of The Wilson Journal of Ornithology.

Alexander Wilson Prize

Awarded for the best paper (usually an oral presentation) presented at the WOS Annual Meeting with a student as the sole presenting author.

Lynds Jones Prize

Awarded for the best poster at the WOS Annual Meeting with a student as the sole presenting author.

Nancy Klamm Undergraduate Presentation Awards

For current undergraduates who are sole presenting authors of a talk or poster at the WOS Annual Meeting.

Ornithological Council

The WOS is one of multiple societies that provides funding from its annual budget in support of the Ornithological Council, but that collective support falls below the amount needed for the OC to operate at full capacity. Individual contributions donated here can be an important source of supplemental funding to extend the operational reach of the OC.

Early Professional Avian Conservation and Community

Honors the contributions of WOS members working in non-research careers that contribute to bird and bird habitat conservation, including applied science, education and outreach, communications, advocacy, and habitat conservation and protection.

WOS Mentoring Program

The WOS mentoring program 1) provides mentorship on the wide variety of careers available in ornithology and avian conservation and how to build skills to be competitive for these careers; 2) builds mentees’ professional networks to aid them as they navigate decision points throughout their careers, and 3) provides information on how to be involved with professional societies such as the WOS.
